What was the identified solution? The organisation of joint events such as meetings, seminars, workshops will allow people to meet each other and share experiences with the objective of increasing the level of cross border cooperation. During these events the participants from the tourism sector will be able to design a Strategic Plan for Tourism 2014-2020 in the Galicia North – Portugal Euroregion.
How was the solution identified? After several meetings between GNP-EGTC and workers in the tourism sector, a Strategic Plan was adopted designed to foster cross-border cooperation and share information in the tourism sector was adopted after reviewing what has been accomplished and prioritising future needs.

How was the solution implemented? By whom?

GNP-EGTC ISAG: The Instituto Superior de Administração e Gestão,the Entidade Regional de Turismo do Porto e Norte de Portugal (TPNP,ER)and the Axencia de Turismo de Galicia are among the key participants in tourism sector in the Galicia-North Portugal Euroregion.

The GNP – EGTC plays an important role in building bridges of communication, dialogue, promotion of investment and cooperation between public and private institutions. In order to define a common development strategy the GNP-EGTC is coordinating meetings of the tourism sector in the Galicia-North Portugal Euroregion to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. With this information a strategic plan of CBC in the tourism sector can be developed.

The tourism sector is a main asset for Spanish and Portuguese economies and a strategic sector for the social and economical development of the Galicia – North Portugal Euroregion. The GNP-EGTC’s goal is to debate, analyze strategies, ways of development, opportunities, etc in the tourism sector, in addition to promoting successful initiatives in the demanding tourism sector.

How long did it take for the solution to be implemented?

The GNP-EGTC’s initiative began in 2012 and will be finished this year with the presentation of a Strategic Plan for Tourism 2014-2020 in the Galicia – North Portugal Euroregion. The GNP-EGTC will organize an International Conference on Tourism in Oporto (Portugal) on 12 July 2013 with participants from the entrepreneurial, professional, and academic sectors.

This event will be the first Luso-Galician meeting in this area, outlining the strategic importance of the tourism sector for regional development, with particular focus on the Galicia – North Portugal Euroregion.The primary focus of this meeting will be to discuss strategies and opportunities in the tourism sector and presenting successful projects in this demanding sector.

Did it have a positive impact on the overall level of CBC in the area? One of the presentations at the Conference, argued that cross-border cooperation in the tourism sector will result in greater development through economies of scale and a more efficient process for the dissemination of promotional material reaching a wider audience. This will benefit the hotel industry in addition to other aspects  related to tourism, such as nautical activities, golf, religious activities, gastronomy, sport and other tourism related activities.
